Birthday #44, but who’s counting
Off and Running with Traditions of Jazz
Traditions of Jazz is off and running, and there are so many irons in the fire—in the best way possible. One of the most wonderful aspects of this season is the beautiful overlap between A Joyful Little Band and Traditions of Jazz. It’s like a restaurant where the front of house and back of house work in perfect synchrony—each part supporting the whole, each player bringing their strengths to the table.
Making music for people is such a lighthearted, joyful experience. But I won’t pretend it’s always easy. I still get nervous. I still have to quiet that self-critical voice whispering, “You’re not good enough.” But I keep putting myself out there. My students see me making music. My friends and family see me just... being me. Authenticity matters—and I’ve never felt more proud to show up fully as myself.
This year, I celebrated my 44th birthday at our favorite local coffee shop, Refuah, raising over $250 for Traditions of Jazz's Pianos in Places program. I was surrounded by my favorite people—many of whom have been cheering us on since our very first family band performance the spring of 2024. The casual gathering was more than just a birthday celebration; it was a reflection of how far this adventure has taken us, and how it is carving out a whole new path forward.
Music continues to teach me that I can be nervous and still show up. I can be vulnerable, sensitive, anxious—and still grow. Making music simply makes everything better. I’m so grateful to be learning alongside other curious musicians who understand that creating music is, by its very nature, a vulnerable act. But it’s also one of the most amazing, joyful, creative, and fulfilling things we can do.
As another birthday fades into the memory books, here’s to another year of learning, growing, and sharing through the joyful lens of traditional New Orleans jazz.
